25 Songs About Addiction and Recovery: ASHES TO ASHES, David Bowie

Again, I am finding myself pressed for time today, and not wanting to rewrite an article that I have essentially written before. Ashes to Ashes was one of the first huge hits of the video era, for David Bowie. The big buzz at the time was his use of the Major Tom character from the song Space Oddity from many years before, but in retrospect, it was Bowie writing about hitting the bottom of his addiction. Bowie died this year, 36 years (!) after this song was released, and as far as I know, he spent all of that intervening time clean. I wrote a review of this song two years ago for the 2014 countdown, listing it as #23 of my all-time favorite songs, and I am going to provide the link to that post.
But obviously, my affection for the song has not decreased. I will point out again that the title of this blog is a line from this song. And I certainly can identify with hitting bottom, and wanting to come down right now.
I've been down for 18 years. And I can't imagine going back up again.

The lyrics and the video are attached to the other post.
